A large part of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with children is reducing and eliminating problem behaviors like aggression. Maladaptive behaviors must be replaced with a more socially appropriate behavior. This is important because many problem behaviors can be dangerous and harmful to the child and the people around them. The problem is that there is little research that has been conducted on this topic. There a few standards for selecting a replacement behavior. In their study; Carr and Durand, conduct two experiments in academic setting to help develop the assessment for identifying problem behavior and choosing an appropriate replacement for behaviors.

The group is too small and there for cannot be generalized to the rest of the population. We are given no details other than gender, age, problem behaviors, and diagnosis. While these details are good they do not show the reader if these four students are an accurate representation of the population that is being studied. It was presented as a group design but, the basis of the authors claims were based heavily on comparison of a date of single subject; Jim. The authors conveniently neglected to examine the behavior of the students whose behavior did not support their claims (75% of the participants) as closely as they did for the one student who did. I believe that it may be difficult to try to facilitate the results of this study in another setting like a school or a hospital. In other applied settings there are a great deal more people that need to be attended to. While I agree that replacement language is a socially important skill to teach, people like teachers and doctors may not have the time available to provide attention or assistance reinforcement as effectively as the administrator in the study. I am curious to see what kinds of effects this study would produce with other replacement behaviors that are non-verbal across a larger subject group.
