The Great fire of Toronto (1904) was great fire that destroyed a large section of Downtown Toronto with damage estimated around $10 million. In total, over 250 firefighters helped fight the fire and used between 9.5 and 11 million litres of water. There were five injuries, including Fire Chief John Thompson who broke his leg in a fall. Fortunately, no lives were lost but the fire, which lasted for about 9 hours. This disaster will be remembered as a significant moment in Toronto history.…
The Novel that I am reading this week is Maybe by the Author Brent Runyon. The novel was first published in 2006 by Borzoi Book. Brent also has a memoir titled The Burn Journals. The title of The Burn Journal was related to the fact that as a fourteen year old he tried to commit suicide by burning himself. He had tried suicide once before, he had attempted to hang himself which he did not succeed at.…
If you are one of the most avid fans of football, you might find it too common to see your favorite football players suffer foot injuries that will inhibit them to play for a part - or even the whole - of the football season. Let us take the case of Ben Roethlisberger for example. Being the Steelers' star quarterback, he should be formidable, right? However, that is not the case as Roethlisberger suffered a major injury last year known as the Lisfranc injury.…
Processing the trauma, the second step of the tri-phasic model, is especially congruent with narrative therapy. Narrative therapy’s focus on retelling and re-experiencing emotionally activated stories coincides with the tri-phasic model’s assertion that remembering, making sense of, and resolving traumatic memories are critical components of processing trauma (Baranowsky, 2015). A client working on trauma through a narrative approach might focus on talking about the trauma, the feelings associated with the trauma experience, and the narratives that shape the client’s interpretation of the trauma (Duvall & Beres, 2007). Part of the storytelling might particularly examine the client’s interpretation of the traumatic experience with emphasis on…
When you break a bone it can be in any part of the body. Breaking a bone or bones can happen from not being very careful when you're doing dangerous stuff. It's pretty common to break a bone or two through out life. Usually when you break a bone you have to get a cast put around the broken bone to put it back into place, and sometimes surgery is necessary to fix the break. No I have never had a broken bone, though I have had a sprained ankle before.…
Reviewing key assumptions of trauma-informed approaches One must review the key assumptions of trauma-informed approaches to achieve the goal of this literature review, which is to explore the extent to which trauma-informed approaches have improved children’s experiences within learning contexts. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggested four key assumptions in a trauma-informed approach (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2014). To start, it is assumed that every person working within an organization has a basic realization about trauma (SAMHSA, 2014). Trauma-informed practice is based on an essential understanding of how trauma impacts people’s lives, and as an extension, their service needs and frequency of use…
The depth of the injury needs to be medically determined along with the percentage of the body affected. When a person is burned over a large area of the body, however, the depth of the injuries may…
There is a certain level of ambiguity that comes with working for a 911 emergency medical service. For as well as I know my protocols, my partner and my equipment, EMS is based on uncertainty. Uncertainty, not just for the individual requesting assistance, but for the crew as well. You see, for every dispatch I receive, I can be sure of only two things: I am going to a location, and there may or may not be a patient there. Her dispatch came in not half-way through my first cup of coffee.…
The main issue I have when it comes to preparing for a play is not being well educated. In my research for the best way to prevent concussions, many athletes lack the proper knowledge to lower their risk of a head injury, or are not aware of the symptoms. It’s important to my profession, as a future physical therapist because experiencing a concussion is a life traumatic event. In the long run patients with concussions had balance problems, fine motor skills and it’s a physical therapist’s job to help them get back to their normal range of motion. Functional activities for these patients can be very difficult and having the proper help will get them back to do daily living activities with ease.…

It takes three to four weeks to heal. In third-degree burns the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis are damaged. The burned area is gray-white, cherry red, or black. A patient would not feel pain because the nerve endings are gone. 3.…
California Wildfires: A Burning Problem California, as of recent decades, has a warming relationship with wildfires. The state has seen an increase in wildfires which some believe to be attributed to anthropogenic climate change. Climate change is expected to result in more variable weather patterns that are likely to lead to longer and more severe droughts (“Climate change”, 2016).…
Class #3 Readings: http://www.cns.nyu.edu/home/ledoux/overview.htm Emotion, Memory and the Brain, Trauma and PTSD Symptoms: Does Spiritual Struggle Mediate the Link? I especially enjoyed the exploration of brain activity and the effect the trauma can have on the brain this week. I think that the way the slides were organized were a great way to gradually expand on knowledge introduced in the readings, and slowly but surely increase the complexity of the ideas. While I am attempting to critically analyze the class, I really do think that the slides and concepts were laid out perfectly and connected well to the course content. The fact that each slide built another layer of information onto the main topic without making things to complex was easy to understand and therefor easy to learn.…
Needle-stick injury (NSIs) is one of the main professional health and safety objects that are common among occupational health care globally. Accidental exposure to blood usually caused by needle injuries or sharps injuries. The main alarming is when exposure to blood or other body fluids of another person who may have any infectious disease. Therefore health care workers should have ample knowledge about their risk and constantly to take appropriate precautions while inclusion of injection.…
My experience in the emergency department at Legacy Salmon Creek during my paramedic education gave me insight to the patients I hope to eventually serve. During this experience, I got the opportunity to help patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses. However, the majority of the patients I worked with did not have emergent conditions. I realized that many patients visited the emergency department because they did not have access to affordable health insurance for preventative care. Emergency visits are expensive and the wait time could be detrimental to patients.…
