Essay For Counselor Assessment

As a student, I still have areas to develop, especially in assessing, diagnosing, and treatment planning. I feel somewhat comfortable with the assessment process as it could be done structured and unstructured ways of gathering information to understand that clients bring to the counseling. I do feel relatively comfortable observing behavior, taking mental notes when is necessary. I like the varieties of instruments that I can utilize accordingly; based on the client’s presenting problem. I have taken the Assessment for Counselor class that introduced us different instruments that can be used as part of the diagnostic and counseling process. I enjoyed learning about how to administer, score and interpret. Just to name a few, Mini Mental Status Exam, Trails A & B, Test of Memory Malingering, NEO, and PAI. I know it requires extensive training and knowledge to use it effectively. Diagnosing a bit more complex to determine as requires piecing together several components and influences of the client’s concern and lifestyle. Therefore, I might be interested in pursuing the certificate in chemical dependency as well. Perhaps, taking online courses would be a good start to acquire more knowledge. Also, I was pondering the idea to attend meetings like 12-Steps, AA and other to gain insight into treatment and their programs. I am certain that it would strengthen my overall knowledge and perspective. As the part of the internship program, I was informed that VA Medical Center offers numerous training programs at the Psychology Department that I can benefit from. Having these learning opportunities, I am looking forward to starting my counseling
