The opportunity to travel is a privilege not many people are able to experience. Every summer, I am fortunate enough to visit my relatives in Poland. With each trip, I learn more about Polish culture, history, and traditions. However, amid the attractions and local beauty, Poland greatly differs from North America. Europe’s vast history of artistic, scientific and revolutionary movements strongly influence peoples’ mentality, habits, and morals. Yet, despite ancient attributes, many European emigrants travel to America in search of new ideas and opportunities. Factors such as these contribute to an already arduous adjustment pertaining to myself. Language, religious, and cultural barriers prove to be an obstacle when trying to adapt to a typical Polish lifestyle. My strenuous nine hour flight to the Warsaw International Airport is met with a reluctant adjustment to the different time zone. Understanding different cultures can be difficult and confusing. The fear of isolation and separation quickly surpass any understanding of the country’s society. However, it is fear that drives excitement; excitement to explore, learn, discover, and meet new people. Although I have concerns of failing to efficiently converse with my family and friends, there are other methods of conveying my emotions. Learning and experiencing different cultures help to broaden my understanding of people’s dreams, desires and aspirations. I strongly believe that awareness of varied environments, traditions, and religions will help to relieve tension in the world and allow societies to coexist peacefully.
