Erlendur's Relationship In Jar City

Decent Essays
A strong bond or a connection with the reader is very important part of a good written book. A connection with the reader is made when the character has something in common with them. A good example for this would be police officer (main character) of the Jar City which is Erlendur. He was going through difficult times when he divorced from his wife and he who also have a drug addict daughter and pregnant at the sametime. As much as a father would be mad at their daughter for their action such as Erlendur’s daughter yet he always took care of her in the book and never let her deal with her problems alone. This makes a reader experiencing with the same issues think positive and not let down someone whether they are your daughter/son or a friend.

A character in a book is a representation of a human, a real human, a human with emotions. Whilst reading a book, one should feel how the characters are feeling as though they were a fellow human. An invaluable tool used by author to do this is sympathy. An author uses sympathy to get the reader to feel the emotions of the character, to understand the emotions. In stories filled with tough topics, such as it is in John Grisham’s Calico Joe, it is important to try to get the reader to feel sympathy because otherwise, the reader may feel detached from and uninterested in a story.…

No author wrote a book in hopes that the reader wouldn't feel a connection or engagement to the story. Every author's intent is to capture or transport the reader, you, even if just for a moment, into a glimpse of their imagined “reality.” When words are given a voice they come to life. A voice gives a novel the ability to transform from a 2 dimensional page into a world where characters have personalities, and scenes feel tangible. Suddenly instead of just looking at a page, the reader is experiencing the story behind the words!…

I also enjoyed the connections that were formed between the characters. There were, of course, major ones that affected the outcome of the book tremendously, but there were also smaller ones whose importance wasn't stressed as much. One example of this that caught my eye was the reappearance of the Franklin Novelty Company throughout the story. In chapter 17, the Franklin Novelty Company buys Tateh's books, which leads to him making a good deal of money later on in the novel. This money allowed Tateh to travel to Atlantic City and meet Mother.…
