The lean management methodology upon which this book was based began from the lean manufacturing principles developed by Taiichi Ohno for the Toyota company in the mid-1900s. Ohno’s approach to production was anything that did not provide immediate value to the customer was considered a waste of resources and subsequently eliminated. This revolutionized Toyota’s manufacturing procedures and inspired many modern project management styles used today. Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup, applied Ohno’s constructs of lean manufacturing to the process of starting businesses in the software industry—a profession traditionally known for Waterfall-style project management. Ries fine-tuned these techniques through the trials and errors of both successful, and failed, software startup firms, and created the lean startup methodology in 2008. The principles of lean startup in this book were found acutely relevant to students and career practitioners of technology management. Examples of such principles included the knowledge of when to pivot in business strategy, the organization of product direction through innovation accounting, and the correct use of metrics to measure business success.
