The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider part of society. It replaces the previous anti-discrimination act. The act covers discrimination because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage, civil partnership, pregnancy, maturity, race, religion, belief, sex, and sexual orientation. These are known as the ‘protected characteristics’

The Act protects people from discrimination by, for example, employers, banks, shops, hospitals, care homes, housing associations, estate agents, schools, colleges, universities, buses, trains, taxis, government departments and local authorities.
