Equal employment opportunity is the base that brings together diversity and affirmative action efforts that everyone should be treated equally for employment opportunities. To best recognize how equal employment opportunity (EEO), affirmative action (AA), and Diversity work together, I will identify how each interact with one another and also discover the differences of the three initiatives. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information …show more content…
Age discrimination can include a staff not interviewing someone because they are young or old to fit with the other employees, not employing a younger person because one is to assume that they will move to another job quickly, or not employing older people because it is assumed that they will retire soon. Religious discrimination involves treating a person (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because of his or her religious beliefs (Religious Discrimination). Harassment can include, for example, offensive remarks about a person's religious beliefs or practices (Religious Discrimination). There are other examples of religion discrimination that are prohibited: dismissing a person because of their religion, being ignored by co-workers, or being denied promotion or training opportunities are considered being …show more content…
Dimensions of diversity include, but are not limited to: age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital or partner status, military experience, parental status, religious beliefs, work experience and job classification (Affirmative Action, EEO & Diversity, 2009). Diversity is about welcoming the mixture of characteristics that makes people distinctive in an environment that promotes and celebrates individual and achievements. Diversity of different age brings an environment where each generation brings different skills and knowledge to the workforce. For example, younger employees usually are stronger in technology such as networking through social media, emailing, or business letters. The older employees are strong with interpersonal skills and an environment where in person communication is used. In many companies this diverse range of skills can be a positive light to cater to generational demographic. Organizations that do not manage diversity effectively will not be able to utilize the full potential of their workers, nor to survive and grow under increasingly complex and competitive business conditions (Wentling, Rose
