Episodic Memories

The information stored in the long term memory can take many forms. However, most long- term memory can be categorized into one of the several types: episodic, semantic, procedural and emotional memories Episodic memories are memories of specific event that happen to you, and can be easily told to another person. Usually these memories come from personal experience. Episodic memories can be compared to a diary that let you go back in time and let you retrieve a personal experience. For instance, recalling that I ate an awesome burrito at chipotle yesterday or that I used to like fish when I was little are called episodic memory. In addition, when a person remembers past experience he or she can anticipate or envision the future event. Semantic memory includes general knowledge such as names of color, basic math and other basic facts that are acquired during our lifetime. For instance, when I recall that 2+2=4 or that Paris is the capital of France show that these memories are Semantic memories. Procedural memory is one type of explicit memories that is responsible for knowing how to do things, also known as skills and habits. These procedural memories stores information on how to perform certain things such as ice skating, riding a bicycle and other thing that are hard to describes in words and require precise sequence of coordinated movement.
