This was my first week at Penn Wood Elementary. This school has about 570 students grades K-5. There is one school nurse, Inez Burg, who is a certified school nurse that graduated from Villanova. On my first day, about 10 minutes after my arrival a 2nd grader came running into the bathroom throwing up. Supposedly a stomach bug had been going around the school and a lot of kids were getting sent home. Inez gave me a tour of the nurses office and showed me where she keeps all the medications and supplies. I got a chance to see all of the students that come in for their daily meds, along with an assortment of students with injuries, cuts, scrapes, stomach aches and headaches.
1. Describe what an Epipen is and how it is important for a school nurse in the school setting.
An Epipen is a single dose injection containing epinephrine, used to treat severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Having an Epipen available is imperative for a school nurse. Discuss and describe the emergency action plans/drills the elementary school has in place and how often drills are performed. Also, identify if there are any special considerations for specific students. This week I met my objective by discussing the procedures with my school nurse.
• Fire drills – One per month. The school nurse would evacuate through the main entrance of the school, taking all students in her office at the time with her.
• Severe Weather drills – Stay away from all windows, stay in the safest place possible in the nurse’s office.
• Lockdown – Two per year. They have a police officer come in and actually simulate an intruder in the building. The nurse would lock the door and put a drape over the window on the door and hide with any students in the office away from doors and windows. The police officer actually bangs on the doors and acts like a real intruder trying to get into the room for a real
