Environmental Risks: Are GMO Environmentally Safe?

Improved Essays
Environmental Risks: The burning question currently plaguing the minds of millions of Americans is one of morality. Are GMOs environmentally safe? The answer is twofold, depending on your personal stance. Because this question is one of morality and ethics or science verses the higher being, we will look at both sides. From the beginning, many scientists have had concerns that the release of these new organisms, with their engineered DNA could have dire consequences. Those consequences not only affect the natural environment, but also conventional and organic agriculture. One of the biggest threats to the environment is the damage to soil. If we consider soil to be an ecosystem, then the simplicity of farming practices damage its composition …show more content…
Regardless of the category they fall in, the overall outcome is that they threaten the health of the soil in which they grow. Despite the many promises of the biotech industry to engineer plants to grow without fertilizer and tolerate extremes of climate, none of these promises have borne fruit. The problem lies with the genetic transformation of the specific DNA targeted. Genes that control stress tolerance and nutrient uptake are far too complex for scientists to replicate in a laboratory. If there is no way to reproduce the things you are trying to put into the environment, how can you predict the outcome? There are now problems with the GMO crops that posed no problem to our environment. The promise of herbicide tolerant crops were of easy weed control and fewer chemical applications, this is now not the case. These crops require fertilizer, and our now producing weeds that are resistant to the common herbicides. These crops are now herbicide tolerant and require the use of stronger and different herbicides to control them. In addition to the crops being herbicide tolerant, they also seem to be more susceptible to fungus and mildew. If the outcome was for the reduction of pesticides or herbicides, the biotech companies have missed the …show more content…
Scientists now believe at least some of these pesticides play a major role in Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the ongoing demise of honeybee colonies. (Web)
How does on justify the production of something that puts millions of farmer at risk of losing the one thing that provides for not just him but others as well. Looking at the graph below, one can see the dramatic decline in the bee population due to GMO organisms.

The companies that sell GMO seeds claim that certain genetically modified crops are better for the environment because they reduce the amount of pesticides and herbicides used in farming, but this has not been shown to be the case. One recent study by researchers at Washington State University estimated that between 1996 and 2011, pesticide and herbicide use increased by more than 400 million pounds as a result of GMO cultivation. This and other evidence suggests that GMO crops are rapidly escalating with weeds and…

Most Genetically modifed crops have been engineered to be herbicide tolerant. Monsanto, as an example, will sell Roundup Ready crops designed to survive the use of their Roundup herbicide. Statistics From 1996 to 2008 say that American farmers had to spray an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs. The overuse of Roundup may result in case of super weeds that are stronger than normal and are resistant to any herbicide. This is now causing farmers to have to use even more harmfully toxic herbicides every year just in order to get any crops.…

To be against genetically modified organisms, is being against the advancement of technology. Over the course of all history many ideas have been shut down before they’ve even seen the light of day, and unfortunately that could be the case for gmo’s. 88% of U.S. scientists say genetically modified foods are safe to eat, and only 37% of Americans agree. Rationally, GMO crops aren't inherently different from other breeding techniques that people already trust—so even though we can't know with 100% certainty that the plants won't have negative effects, there's also no reason to think that they will (Peters). People tend to give them a bad rap simply because they don’t further research them.…

The Grim side of GMOs The ongoing debate around the world is, are genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs, good for you and the environment? Research however shows GMO’s are bad for you, the environment and have had not enough testing. Imagine coming home, the whole day you've been waiting for that special treat in the fridge, nothing bad could happen from eating this treat on the outside, but inside your kidneys are slowly being destroyed and immune system weakened. These GMOs are terrible because of extreme health risks.…

Toxic residues are left in the soil of GM crops. Nutrients are not returned to the soil in mono crops and from GMO foods, meaning that soil is becoming dry and void of all nutrients, generally integral to the growing process" (The environmental impact) . This makes our food not as healthy as they can be for us and putting our bodies in harm. We are destroying more then what we are suppose to be making better. Us as a nation are already using GMOs to much in our foods today.…

Labeling should not be used as a scarlet letter in order to support a political point of view on GMO’s. Science, not emotion should rule in matters of public safety. We have government regulators working in concert with producers of GMO’s to insure only safe products are introduced into the marketplace. Government agencies have a sworn duty to protect consumers and producers have an economic stake in assuring their products are indeed safe. Their track record in this regard is stellar.…

How Safe Are GMO (Genetically modified organisms) Large numbers of GMO activists see GMO foods as a danger to the environment and the human immune system. They call these foods frankenfoods because they aren’t naturally made and don’t provide any offspring. These types of foods are made in laboratories.…

Genetically modifying foods is not an exact science, and is more a game of genetic roulette. “The complexity of the genetic makeup and responses makes it extremely difficult to predict the outcome” (Ruse, Castle). Dr. Michael Antonia a British scientists who has a degree in Molecular Science even said “gene- splicing has already resulted in the unexpected production of toxic substances”(Miller). Furthermore, the GMOs that have been released and are herbicide resistant are able to be soaked in herbicides and not damage the product. This means that the consumers are eating these pesticides.…

What many think of as “bad for the environment” is the idea of genetically engineering crops and an unnatural process which could cause negative effects on the soils. But, in actuality, according to the article “The Environmental Impact of GMOs” from Onegreenplanet.org, those aren’t the main concerns of scientists. The main and probably biggest concern is the toxins (especially from the pesticides) within the GMOs themselves and the effects those toxins may inherently have on insect and animals. The article tells us that “GMOs may be toxic to non-target organisms, bees and butterflies being the most talked about”. This is plenty cause for concern since the importance of bees (and believe it or not) butterflies is to pollinate the Earth and the plants we need to survive.…

The pesticides used on GMO crops spread by the wind, moving from crop to weeds. As the plants are insect resistance, they weeds will also become insect resistance. Not just the environment is deteriorating, but the animals are also being harmed by GMO crops. Organic Authority research shows that, “Monarch butterflies have also died after their favorite food, milkweed, was cross-pollinated from Bt corn which rendered it toxic to the endangered species.” (organicauthority.org) Endangered animals such as the monarch butterflies are dying by GMO crops.…

Humans have always taken control of their environment. The human species created houses, cars, and medicine to increase our comfort and longevity. These innovations are generally beneficial; however, they have allowed our population to increase substantially, and have injured our climate into chaos. If the human population intends to survive, they must combat the chaos they created. It seems that challenges posed by climate change and a growing world population the resistance to adverse conditions, increase in crop yield, and decrease in environmental harm associated with GMO's indicate that GMO farming will be the most sustainable farming method in the future.…

However, there has not been enough conclusive evidence to conclude that GMOs are bad for humans. Banning GMOs would not solve a problem like this anyways, as nearly everyone takes in GM soybean products. It could even be argued that GM crops are safer than regular crops if they are designed to be resistant to pests. These plants would not need heavy duty chemicals to protect them, and there would be less damage to the environment around them. Pesticides in runoff can kill organisms that it was not intended for, but with pest resistance built in, pesticides are not needed.…

Recently, debates over genetically modified organisms have taken place, but what many people don’t realize is that humans have been modifying the genes of plants for thousands of years. From the beginning of time to now, most likely, nothing that we consume looks the same, so why are debates over things being genetically modified taking place now? In 1983, Monsanto, along with three academic teams, were among the first to genetically modify a plant cell, which has led to many different opportunities in genetic engineering (Wald). Since then, some faults have been identified, but many people are failing to realize some of their major benefits, such as those in the environment and the agricultural industry, pharmaceutical industry, and the economy.…

Six Body Paragraphs Genetically modified organisms have not been around for years and years, but have still accumulated a history and have rapidly spread around the world. “The first GM crops were commercialized by China in the early 1990’s” (Nelson 3) and have grown into a massive industry since then. From 1996 to 2006 the amount of acreage planted with GM crops across the globe increased from 1.7 to 102 million hectares (Kriepe 4) and is still on the rise.…

There are many ethical, legal and social concerns surrounding GMOs in the United States and worldwide. Some ethical concerns regarding GM foods are damage to the environment, triggering allergies and disease in consumers, disruption in the food web, and cross-pollination, which causes weeds to grow uncontrollably (http://www.geneticallymodifiedfoods.co.uk/ethical-concerns-gm-foods.html). Ian Murnaghan’s article states, “There are fears that if these crops do negatively impact the environment, they will spread in an out-of-control fashion and we will not be able to stop their damaging effects” (http://www.geneticallymodifiedfoods.co.uk/ethical-concerns-gm-foods.html). Even though having crops that are resistant to pesticides is extremely beneficial to human both economically and in treating the issue of world hunger; it is harmful to skylark birds. As Murnaghan states, “Skylark birds that consume the seeds from this particular weed would now be required to find a new food source, thereby endangering their existence” (http://www.geneticallymodifiedfoods.co.uk/ethical-concerns-gm-foods.html).…
