Environmental Effects: The Adverse Effects Of Global Warming

Global Warming Effect Long before humankind inhabited the Earth, climate has varied from place to place in a naturally variable manner. We have seen areas go from warm to cold, wet to dry and back time and time again. This natural occurrence with Earth’s weather patterns have never been put under extreme scrutiny until recently. The temperature on Earth is rising and scientists believe humankind is having an adverse impact on Earth’s ability to handle the increased Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Lutgens and Tarbuck (2014) stated that Earth’s tremendous industrialization of the past two centuries is driven by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum, resulting in large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere. …show more content…
We have introduced many pollutants into the atmosphere that are actually increasing the gases that cause the greenhouse effect. Lutgens and Tarbuck (2014) stated that Americans are responsible for nearly 20 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions from our industrial life styles. The majorities of Americans have homes, drive cars, and operate machinery that requires the burning of fossil fuels that emit CO2 into the air. The greenhouse effect is caused by the interaction between Earth’s atmosphere and incoming radiation from the Sun. Solar radiation passes through the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface where it is absorbed and then radiated upward as heat. According to Bradford (2014), “Human-caused global warming occurs when human activity introduces too much of certain types of gas into the atmosphere. More of this gas equals more warming. The atmospheric gases primarily responsible for the greenhouse effect are known as "greenhouse gases" and include water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O)” …show more content…
For as long as weather has been recorded, humankind can attest to significant weather changes and patterns across the globe. Normal weather conditions are calculated using a law of averages. Meteorologists will look at a day and compare to an average high and low temperature on that given day from a range of thirty or more years. This helps account for anomalies from El Nino or La Nina and any other adverse events that might occur from one year to another. In addition to average high and low temperatures, Meteorologists also review precipitation, wind, humidity, and anything else considered part of normal weather conditions. The global warming affect is substantial and certainly alters the everyday normal weather conditions. With the rise in temperatures, Earth has seen an increase in severe weather activity such as heat waves, cold snaps, hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, blizzards, floods, and

Unpredictable climatic shifts described by Brian Fagan in “The Little Ice Age” had a large impact European history from 1300 through 1850, marked by significant temperature drops and turbulent weather. During this time, families suffered after the weather ruined agricultural crops and caused fish to stay further south, in turn negatively affecting economies. The wet summers and cold winters also aided in the spread of epidemics. The failing crop harvests as well as flopping fishing territories. Brian Fagan demonstrates the unique implications the Little Ice Age had on history, finding interesting connections between weather patterns and events.…

Climate scientists agree the main cause of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions. Created when sunlight reaches the Earth’s surface, it can either be absorbed by the Earth or reflected back into space. The planet releases some of the energy back into the atmosphere when the rest is absorbed as heat. These gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor: absorb the energy, decelerating or inhibiting the loss of heat back into space. Therefore the gases acting like a blanket, causing the Earth to increase in temperature.…

Does human activity affect climate change causing global warming? To understand global warming better, we need to better understand greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases. So, what is the greenhouse effect? Greenhouse Effect is the trapping of the sun’s heat in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the surface.…

Most scientist would believe that the main cause of the climate change is the rise in the greenhouse effect. The Greenhouse effect is the process of which radiation from the planet’s atmosphere warms the earth’s surface above what it would be without the atmosphere. Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Gases that influence the greenhouse effect is water vapor, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane. Some have a positive feedback like water vapor and others have a negative feedback like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.…

3.0 - The Science of Climate Change 3.1 – What is Climate Change? The earths climate is changing and forever will be due to neurogenic and anthropogenic changes. Climate change is just a cycle, that will occur from neurogenic changes however humans are dramatically increasing this cycle warming the atmosphere and ocean (IPCC, 2013). Currently greenhouse gasses: carbon dioxide(CO2), methane(CH4) and nitrous oxide(N20) have been released in large amounts into the atmosphere, warming planet earth (NASA, 2016).…

Greenhouse gases are caused by human actions and pollution (Science in Context). This quote shows that greenhouse gases have been higher lately, which causes more global warming: ‘In 2011 the concentrations of these greenhouse gases exceeded the pre-industrial levels by about 40 percent, 150 percent, and 20 percent, respectively. Concentrations…

Global warming and climate change are a result of the lifestyle and actions humans have taken over the past one hundred years and through the industrialization era. The burning of fossil fuels in an industrial setting and through divining cars increases the CO2 levels in the atmosphere and consequently warms the Earth. Cutting down and burning forests also has a large impact on global warming and climate change. Trees intake carbon dioxide and release oxygen, so when forests are cut down, the trees do not consume the carbon dioxide; therefore, there is an excess amount of CO2 in the air. Also, changes in land use directly influence climate change because to change land uses fossil fuels are burned and there is a loss of vegetation increasing CO2 levels.…

I thought that this film was incredibly well-made. I greatly appreciated the call-to-action near the film’s end, encouraging viewers to vote for leaders who will fight for climate change, especially since we are nearing a crucial election where one candidate has openly denied the existence of climate change, claiming that it is merely “a hoax” and that global warming is simply “the weather”. This feel made me feel anger, not only at my own ignorance, but at the inability of countries which are greatly contributing to climate change to act, especially the United States. While politicians in the United States are too concerned with fueling their reelection campaigns with the funds provided by interest groups and political action committees (PACs)…

Mankind has played a major role in causing climate change on Earth. Starting in the early 19th Century, the industrial revolution used fossil fuels massively. The use of raw fossil fuels in the 19th century contributed only a small part to increase in greenhouse gas. “In the 1990’s, humans added 8.0×1015 grams of carbon (1015 grams of carbon = 1 PgC) to the atmosphere each year, primarily by burning fossil fuels (6.4 PgC/yr) and clearing land in the tropics (1.6 PgC/yr). The ocean took up 28% of this carbon, and the land absorbed 32%.…

“Greenhouse gases can warm the planet by absorbing the Sun’s heat, and then remitting it into the atmosphere”(Ricketts, 2011). These greenhouse gases are causing the Arctic ice cap to melt at an increasing rate. Studies are predicting that the arctic could be ice free between the years 2020-2060 because of greenhouse gases (ProCon, 2016). Greenhouse gases isn’t the only cause either. Burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil will increase the concentration of carbon dioxide.…

On 18 November 2016, Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama made an emotional appeal to the next US President: "President-elect Trump, I formally invite you to Fiji…we will show you how we are already having to move entire communities out of the way of the rising seas…the world looks to America for leadership as we work together to confront this challenge to our survival and the well-being of our planet.” This desperate appeal of a statesman demonstrates the dilemma of climate change: It has regional economic and security implication but the solutions to this partially human caused problem have to be found on the global level in a consensus. There are incentives for nations, to avoid involved costs for countering climate change. On the other…

With that being said I’ll begin by discussing what is causing global warming to take place right before our eyes. Body: I. To put it bluntly, the cause of global warming is human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas. a. These are the significant driving factors in global warming. According to Global Warming from Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change “Many human processes ranging from industry, transportation, power stations, agriculture, fossil fuel development and usage, to residential and commercial activities have variously led to the production of high amounts of greenhouse gases.”…

The subject of climate change has been hotly debated over the past decade. It is now obvious that the climate is changing and that it is more than likely going to cause problems in the future. The amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere has considerably increased since the Industrial Revolution. As fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and crude oil are burned, carbon dioxide is discharged into the atmosphere where it is trapped. This is called the greenhouse effect and although essential to the survival of all life on Earth, this process has gotten out of hand recently.…
