Enlightenment Era The Enlightenment Era was a period in the 1600-1800s where educated Europeans changed the way they looked at life to see enlightenment which was progress. Another name for this era was Age of Reason. This era challenged not only the way you look at life but your beliefs. The philosophers in this time period wanted to use ideas not only for the scientific revolution but to find and solve the problems within government and society. Europeans changed the outlook on not only life, but also the way of life, new forms of government, and freedom to express the way you felt about not only life itself but also the government style and rule. Some of them even questioned the fact that God choose royalty and kings received their authority from God himself. Back then people were so afraid of the government that they would never question it or the laws. All this was until the Enlightenment thinkers came along. Philosopher gathered in salons to exchange ideas and debate. Sometimes these debates would last for hours. Many of these gatherings were had to make and spread the idea of enlightenment. Many of these thinkers rejected authority and made sure to never forget they had the freedom to speak for themselves and others that were afraid to let their voices be heard. The Enlightenment Era may have happened years ago, but it stills helps us today. For example The Declaration of Independence took many of the major laws and ideas from that era. Many of our Founding Father’s studied the ideas of enlightenment during the revolution. Such as, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.
