How would one describe the normal student? Solely base it off of the student’s physical features and life styles, or the student’s political stand point? In a class survey, the results showed that a normal student in an English 1102 class at Valdosta State University is a first year student between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one that lives in Georgia and believes college is very important. The surveys were split up into three or so categories. One being the Student’s Lifestyle, the second is all about College, Demographics, and Technology, and lastly, it was about Politics and Sex, Dating, and Relationships.
The first of the categories was about the student’s lifestyles. The results showed the average student is: a freshman that believes college/education is very important in their own lives; usually wakes up at eight in the morning; was glad to leave home; listens to rap music; and strives for greatness. With all of these taken into consideration, the average student of an English 1102 class is a typical person. The students are already in college and see that as a priority. The students do what he or she needs to in order to be the best they can be, even if that means getting up at the crack of dawn to go to an eight a.m. class. Just like any freshmen in college, he or she was glad to leave home and

I am a single female who would date someone who is older than me and I do believe that having someone on the side is cheating. If one is one hundred percent exclusive with your partner/significant other, there is no need to cheat or be talking to anyone else. That is something I believe in strongly. I am actually one of the very few to not be sexually active. I don’t see the need to waste my time with something that is going to possibly alter my future in a matter of minutes. I’ll just wait till I find the right one at the right time. Call me an

My experience to English 1101 was totally different from my high school English class, but it was also a good learning experience. Making the transition from high school was a lot different because of the fact that college you only have the class for a semester and in high school you have the same teacher all year. I learned a few things last year in English 1101 that I didn't know. I learned how to do a film analysis on the movie The Village and how the colors from the movie had a meaning behind them. We also learned from the movie how the position of the camera means something.…

Students attending college are now exposed to the real world of being responsible for their attendance in classes. College life is more diverse than high school, because students now have the ability to make their own life choices and College students have more freedom than high school students do. Being able to take the classes they want, need, and also paying for their own courses. College students have to be committed to do well in their classes, but also have their own decision making if they want to be present to class or not. Now that students know they have all the freedom they want, some students think they don’t necessarily have to show up to class since they are paying for it.…

Throughout my time in English 101, my writing has undergone drastic improvements. The first writing assignment I chose to revise was Project 1, the Advertisement Analysis. My first draft of Project 1 had no clear thesis and no specific claim, ideally, an easy problem to solve. However, this was a common issue in my writing in most of my projects this semester, so it only made sense to tackle this project and revise it first. To begin revising Project 1, I first established my thesis statement which was that: the “Best Buds” advertisement was effective because of the incorporated rhetorical strategies and the overall theme of loyalty.…

My revision of “Face it, America!” that follows this cover letter reflects what I have learned in English 1021 so far. While revising this essay, I learned when to use present tense in my writing and past tense in my writing when appropriate. In this class, I have learned to use more transitions and appropriate transitions in my writing. My revision reflects this because in my second paragraph where I mention the significance of police officers, I use transition words for every new sentence that needs it.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

I enter in the small dimly lit room, exchanging polite smiles with the one other students that still linger in Mrs. Dean’s tenth grade English classroom. Making a repetitive back and forth trek after setting my things down and walking back to the white board. Where the black and white paper cutout of a classmates face sits; held up by a single piece of tape, surrounded by the dry erase markings from the day befores lunch artwork. His face is placed over the drawn on body of a penguin, only to be erased for the lunch group to agree upon a new drawing for the day. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

English 1101 is a course aimed to prepare students for their future writing courses and have the necessary skills for writing college level work. Coming into this course I was hopeful that it would improve my general writing skills since throughout my secondary schooling it was acceptable but not exceptional. My current faults are hindering the comprehensiveness of my writings because readers have to sift through the damage to understand the argument and focus of the topic. While I am able to come up with content my inability to logically put it into a written form is something I intended to improve. After this course I hope to have revamped my former weaknesses so I can be a more clear and cohesive writer for the future…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

I can reflect back on being in your 10th Grade English Class listening to you prepare my class and I for this very time in our lives. We are studying and will be exploring four objectives in my EN 213 Course here at Alcorn State University and I am almost certain that I am well prepared for them. For each objective, I have my own perspective on what I think each one means and this is what will help me understand them even better. For example, our first objective is to read and appreciate literary texts. This objective is very much self-explanatory because we will be doing just what it says “read and appreciate” which means we will be reading a text and comprehending or understanding it to the extent where we can tell our instructor what happened in the text, why it happened, and what we think would have happened next.…
