The human body is made up of cells and is designed to constantly create new cells by division. Once old cells die the new cells take their place. According to the American Cancer Association, Cancer can start anywhere within the human body and is known for its ability to grow uncontrollably. There are many types of cancer, some grow fast, some grow slow and there are different ways to treat different types of cancer. Cancer cells are hungry and need nutrients to be able to grow and divide rapidly. To feed themselves they constantly change their metabolism. Although the actual cause for cancer is still questionable, what is the role of metabolism in cancer? …show more content…
Normal cells use glucose for energy and require oxygen. Researchers found that the cancer cells do not require oxygen and less energy through the process known as fermentation. Further research included growing cancer cells and normal cells and feeding nutrients. The nutrients were used to see what different reactions the nutrients had on the cancer cells. The researchers find that amino acids excluding glutamine contribute to a larger portion of cell mass unlike glucose which contributes to a smaller portion of cell mass. Amino acids showed more rapid
