Energy Cause Changes In Matter Or The Ability To Do Work

Improved Essays
Energy is the ability to cause changes in matter or the ability to do work. Modern civilization thrives because people have learned how to change energy from one form to another. They use the changed energy to complete work. We use energy to move cars along roads and boats through water, to cook food on stoves, to make ice in freezers, and to light our homes. We use energy for everything!
Generating energy means converting energy from one form into another. For example, a popcorn machine changes electrical energy to thermal energy, which heats the popcorn. The heat causes the popcorn to pop. You may observe popping corn has mechanical energy. It overflows the pot and falls into the bottom of the machine. The popping corn also uses

A microwave is an example of electromagnetic energy.
Thermal (heat): the energy of moving atoms of matter. All matter has thermal energy because atoms of all matter are constantly moving. A track runner puts in hard work to run. The runner is soaked with sweat which is an indication the hard work is paying off.
Potential energy is the stored energy an object has because of its position or state. A bicycle on top of a hill has potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. When potential energy is used it is converted into kinetic energy. You can think of potential energy as kinetic energy waiting to happen. We can compare potential and kinetic energy by considering a car on a hill. When the car is at the top of the hill it has the most potential energy. If it is sitting still, it has no kinetic energy. As the car begins to roll down the hill, it loses potential energy, but gains kinetic energy. The potential energy of the position of the car at the top of the hill is getting converted into kinetic energy. Another good example is a roller coaster. When it is on its way up, it is using kinetic energy since the energy is in motion. When it reaches the top it has potential (or stored)

First, we started out with a ramp that we dropped the ball on. That was our potential energy. Next, we had a ball drop down a tub at approximately 180°. That was mechanical energy. After that, the ball went through an elbow and hit another ball causing more mechanical energy and thermal energy from a ball hitting the other ball.…

Wind: An Energy Source Alternative Wind power is a renewable source of energy. Wind turbines convert the wind’s kinetic energy into mechanical or electrical energy that can be used for power. Wind energy is viewed as a clean alternative to fossil fuels and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wind energy can provide a lot of benefits to the ecosystem and economy of the United States. While wind energy does have a lot of perks, some people argue that wind energy is an expensive and unreliable source of energy.…

Thesis: Our energy comes predominantly from fossil fuels because of it’s supposed inexpensiveness. However, the cost of fossil fuels in terms of human lives is often ignored. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a much safer alternative because it results in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal and natural gas. By comparing their outputs in terms of energy produced per unit of fuel consumed, and comparing that with the amount of byproducts produced as well as the amount of deaths associated with both energy sources we can analyse their relative harmfulness.…

The innovations created to harness energy are driven by the available energy, not the other way around. From the beginnings of civilisation, humanity has fought over resources, over energy. We have built great cities and entire civilisations around energy. Those who could more successfully harness energy have conquered the world. Even to this day global politics is still driven by energy and every decision humanity makes, is made with energy in mind.…

The use of nuclear power has been under debate for many years; with issues such as environmental impact, safety, cost, waste management, and efficiency, the cons clearly outweigh the pros. Nuclear power plants have been supplying electricity to the population for nearly 60 years, but all things must come to an end as better options emerge and humanity develops as a species. It 's only natural for things to become outdated, or be replaced by better options as they become available. Nuclear power is a source of energy, created through a reaction when a uranium atom is split, releasing heat that is used to produce electricity. It was initially used as an alternative to coal, as coal-burning facilities were becoming a hazard to the environment.…
