This is seen in the case of Rahel. The whole scene is based on this one fact. Rahel knows that Frank loves her. Yet, an outsider in the form of Lou is able to convince her that her lover is cheating on her. Also, the setting is consistent with the nature of Rahel’s marriage in the novel where it is shown that the marriage is not a happy one.
Another issue that is explored is that of the cold and calculating nature of Lou to get his job done, mostly by crook. The ending shows that Lou had, in fact, been manipulating Rahel the whole time by lying about his occupation. Although his ulterior motives aren’t revealed in the scene, it is clear that he has an antipathy to Frank. Looking at it from the perspective of the movie, the motives become clear. Thus, the issue remains that people are selfish and for achieving their means they resort to manipulative methods irrespective of how that affects relationships.
The setting, circumstances and the characters bring out the issues which are explained above. The ending does the same as we realize that Lou manipulates Rahel and the message to Frank initially was actually from Henry on Lou’s
