There are about 650 that are foreign species, and they are only found in areas outside the United States and their waters. We have jurisdiction over about 151 threatened and endangered marine species, including about 57 foreign species. The U.S. work with fish with U.S. fish and wildlife service (USFWS) to manage ESA- listed species. We generally, manage marine species, and the USFWS manages land and freshwater species. Once something go extinct its gone forever and there is no getting it back. Losing even one animal or species could have a real bad effect on the rest of the ecosystem, because the effects will be felt throughout the food chain. For example, if we lose mosquitos larva the mosquitos are going to over populate the population and that would be bad for everybody. One animal that is under the ESA is the endangered Bald Eagle. In the 1960’s the Bald Eagle about 500 and could found in under 48 states. The thing that is killing off the bald eagle is chemicals that was released into the bald eagle habit and it thinned the shells of their eggs and it was killing the baby’s. This was not good at all for our national symbol. Luckily we had ESA the bald eagle population is more than 7,000 breeding pairs of bald eagles today. We now have the captive breeding programs, habitat protection, and we have a ban on DDT contribution to successful recovery of this American symbol. The Eagle has made a major comeback thanks to the great work of the ESA and American citizens, scientist and the United States government. These diverse great groups to help protect the bald eagles. Another species that is protect by the act is the Florida panther. In 1989 the Florida panther population dropped tremendously to about 30 to 50 panthers. This major decline was because, of habitat loss.
