The University of New Hampshire stated “They found 53 species with a distribution that overlaps the area of the oil spill that are categorized as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Of these, only 14 receive legal protection in the United States under the Endangered Species Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, or the Marine Mammal Protection Act.”2 Not only average healthily populated animals but dozens species that are at risk of disappearing off the face of the earth. More oil drilled by the USA would mean more energy independent. Many jobs would be created and the revenue for the state would be in the billions. In spite of this, the world is realizing that fossil fuels are impacting the environment creating the need for renewable resources. If the money that was used for offshore drilling was put towards green energy the USA would be able to reduce dependence on foreign oil even more so than using the new domestic oil. In addition to, renewable energy being cleaner for the world. When there is a spill this will cause billions of dollars in damage to Florida, the revenue created will not fix this.
To conclude, Florida’s oceans are fragile. Oil spills of any size will be a disaster. Even tiny spills, which never happen, will scare tourists away and taint fish. Large spills will have environmental impacts that can’t be ever be fully fixed. The benefits do not outweigh the risks, nor do the ends justify the
