Depending on the obligations there are two types of pension plans, defined benefit plans and defined contribution plans

A defined contribution plan is a type of retirement plan in which the employer, employee or both make contributions on a regular basis. individual accounts for participants and benefits are set are based on the amounts credited to these accounts plus any return on investment of the money in the account. Traditionally, many public and governmental entities, as well as a large number of corporations, provides defined benefit plans, sometimes as a means of compensating workers instead of higher pay. Traditional pension plan defines a benefit for an employee to the employee retirement plan is a defined benefit plan.

The most common type of formula used is based on employee earnings terminal (final salary). Under this formula, the benefits are based on a percentage of average earnings over a number of years at the end of the career of a worker.
