mportance of Empathy and Being a Nurse When someone you know or love, including yourself, is sick, it can be challenging to mentally and physically deal with the situation on your own or with family. That's why the nurses and doctors are there to help or guide their patients through a time of havoc and distress. They, as a team, treat physically, while also helping to heal mentally. This process is known as being empathic. Empathy is the identification of how someone else is feeling. More formally as, the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another (Morales). The importance of this, as a healthcare provider, is that a provider must be able to understand and listen to their patients. This creates a bond between a patient and provider, that shows that a provider truly cares about their patients. This factor can contribute to the patient's emotional or behavioral reactions in situations. Remembering this will contribute to how a healthcare provider will respond and connect to the patient. Without such it will make the patients lives more difficult and the providers work more difficult as well. For instance, if a patient gets angry at a healthcare provider for something that has nothing to do with them and the provider is not empathetic, that provider might continue, from that point on, to see that patient differently and not be as professional as they should be. Empathy is very significant as a healthcare provider. It comforts a patient and enlightens the providers day to day jobs.
