The psychological effects of both emotional abuse & neglect include: (1) Development of a lack of trust in people/causes difficulties in forming/maintaining relationships; (2) Deep down feelings of being worthless; and (3) trouble controlling emotions. The negative psychological effects attained by either emotional abuse or neglect, become detrimental to a child’s social ability. The effects of the two sort of maintain a cycle; suffering from the psychological maltreatment might cause a child to not know how to trust; because the child does not know how to trust, he/she has difficulty maintaining a relationship. If he/she can’t maintain a relationship they might start to feel worthless, feeling as though they are not good enough for anybody to stick around. That is when the child may start to lash out in negative ways (promiscuity, delinquency), as they get older, in compensation for their feelings of lack of self-worth.
