Introduction:
One of the targets set by the Ministry of Health (MOH) is to have a shorter stay of patients in the Emergency Department (ED). It states that 95% of patients will be admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours from an Emergency Department (Ministry of Health [MOH], 2011). Every District Health Board (DHB) reports quarterly to the MOH regarding their progress in meeting the target (MOH, 2015a).
This paper will show how the North Shore Hospital, part of the Waitemata DHB is complying with the target set by the MOH. This will also include an interrogation and analysis on how and why the hospital is achieving their targets. In addition to these, there will be recommendations included for further improvement in the hospital and an analysis on the relationship between governance, leadership, organisational culture and continuous improvement within the hospital.

Their process starts with a quick triage and screening to decide if the patient’s case needs to be treated right away or not. After the triage, the patient with the most serious injury will need to be treated first than those who are not that serious. After the initial treatment, the patient will then be admitted, discharged or transferred to another institution depending on their personal case (Waitemata District Health Board, 2015).
