Stem cells have become one of the most prominent fields of research within the medical industry, since the 20th century in the modern scientific world. A stem cell is an immature biological cell that has the potential to transform into differentiated specialised cells to perform various functions and features within a body. These cells are found within various multi – cellular organisms, and have the potential to reproduce by the process of mitosis to produce more stem cells. In mammals, these cells are found in forms of adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. An adult stem cell also known as a somatic stem cell is a multipotent cell that is found throughout the body in various organs and structures such as bones, fat etc. The main function of these cells within the body is to maintain tissue homeostasis by replenishing senescent or damaged cells. …show more content…
These cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilised in an in vitro fertilisation clinic. The main function of embryonic stem cells is to go through the cell division to produce more stem cells to regenerate or repair any diseased tissue and organ within the body. The two general properties of adult and embryonic stem cells have allowed them to be quite useful to the medical industry. These cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods, and have the ability to give rise to specialised cell type. These features have attracted scientists and researchers for over three decades, as these cells have the capability to aid scientists to develop treatments for diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, etc, and have allowed them to regenerate patients destroyed body organs
