Embrace My Individuality

I don’t always march in a straight line, sometimes I vere off in a different direction. I’ve always known I’m not your average suburban middle schooler. Whether it’s my hobbies or friends, I pursue the unconventional. I’d like to say that what my peers think of me doesn’t influence my decisions; however, that’s only partially true. Some days I love that I am unique, and I want to fully embrace my individuality. Other times, I desire to blend into the crowd, and be more like my peers. Although my life might be easier if I pursued the latter option, but I would be unfulfilled and ultimately miserable. As long as I can express myself, I accept that not everyone will like or understand me. Furthermore, being confident in who I am is a trait I have always admired. Although I am still young, I know I would dread conforming just to please someone else. Why would I want to copy my peers, when I can be someone they admire by being true to myself. I don’t expect millions of people to idolize me; however, I desire those I’m close with to think of me as someone who wasn’t afraid to be herself. The optimal way to bypass the black void of nameless faces, is to venture out of my …show more content…
How would people perceive me? Maybe I’ll be known as the girl who sings impulsively and prefers theatre to sports. That’s not a bad thing, since that is who I am. It’s one of my unique characteristics that I am proud to posses. Everyone has diverse qualities, and insecurities. Some people are just better at concealing the parts of them that they deem undesirable. Anyone daring enough to stand up for themselves and proclaim, “this is me,” is worthy of being my role model. Perchance I won’t ever have the confidence to entirely accept myself, but I don’t think anyone truly does. More than anything, I’m cognizant that it’s easier to write about my desire for self confidence than it is to display my true self to everyone

Rebellion against the cultural norms determined by society can lead an individual into some of the most defining moments in their life. Most of the time, I am judged because I go against the crowd. However, going against the crowd is what has defined and shaped who I am. Dr. Seuss once said, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Many people seem to know this quote, or have at least heard of it. Most of them even agree wholeheartedly with it. Why is it then, that we still feel the need to fit in? When watching Finding Forrester, the theme of struggling to fit in and the reality of how hard it can be when you stand out, become the most apparent to me.…

Run, Sheep, Run is a short story written by Rosemary Howland that follows Nancy Martin’s perspective on Mattie Babcock, the new girl at school. Mattie seems to be different than the girls and boys at Edison High, being tall and big boned. In the story, she is described as having a plain face, drab hair, and a big toothy smile, which was the main thing that everyone at Edison High noticed. Before reading this short story, I read the title, which is what I usually do before indulging myself in a possibly magnificent book. The title reminded me of a shepherd leading its sheep around, because that’s the job of a shepherd.…

While reading the article entitled “Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Be Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice” by Adam Grant, I found that I was immediately drawn to it because I agreed with many of the concepts Grant addressed. To be honest, I did not realize what a commonly used phrase “be yourself” was, and still is, until he pointed it out. Grant points out that while most people claim honesty and authenticity is the best policy, when this theory is actually put into use the negative effects of the two can be observed very quickly. Grant utilizes an experiment performed by author A.J. Jacobs to demonstrate these negative effects. Jacob’s efforts at being “totally authentic” backfired rather quickly.…

Some people aren’t satisfied with just finding themselves. “If I can be authentic for a moment: Nobody wants to see your true self. We all have thoughts and feelings that we believe are fundamental to our lives, but that are better left unspoken” (Grant 2017). Being yourself doesn't mean it will give you happiness. It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…
