Emancipation Act Persuasive Speech

The prime minister recently passed the Emancipation Act in April, which allowed both English and Irish Roman Catholics to be admitted into the Parliament and many other public offices. Already we seeing the everyday effects of this act. Catholics are being more excepted and are looked at as real people with rights. The Catholic community feels respected, as one young mother said, “This act will change the way my children grow up in the world, they have a chance to make a better life for themselves.” As an Anglican, I can not relate to the troubles Catholics have had with this issue because my faith has always allowed people to hold high power positions, but I do believe that with this step our world is moving into a more just world. I was able to speak to some people in the front line fighting for their rights and they have said that this is only the first step in gaining respect in England. I believe that this could be a wonderful idea if carried out correctly. The Parliament needs to understand that a person’s religious beliefs does not change how they should be represented in society and if religion and law stay together it will cause more problems. For example, if people are judged based on their religion there will be more violence against them, chances of rioting and unfair social standings. These people’s ability to live a good life should not be based on their identity and what they believe in. England is the most powerful country right now and what we do with our law, other governments will follow. If we are judgmental or corrupt then other will become judgmental or corrupt which will lead to a world of unjustness. It is my belief that the Emancipation Act is only the first step to a better world and I am happy to see that our government is open to making our society
