“The Great Chain of Being” interprets the hierarchical structure in which everything existing has a certain position. The chain is imagined vertically, and goes in chronological order (from highest to lowest). Within each category (component, link, etc.) there is also an order. For example in Heaven God ruled over the archangels and angels. The chain is interlocked and interdependent. It is believed that if something or someone tries to change the order or go beyond their position, then that will cause universal disorder and chaos. For people living during this era the fear of “disorder” was very conspicuous. It was useful to political rulers because it helped enforce their authority by applying fear of “rising beyond one’s place”. There were implications that civil rebellion would cause the chain to be demolished. “The Chain of Being” concept allowed the “valid reasoning” of authority, suggesting there were ideal behaviours acted out in certain positions in the
