Although all St. Luke’s students are required to have an after school activity, not all students have confined themselves to campus. Instead, some students have decided to take the path less travelled and join the workforce. The St. Luke’s Sentinel sat down with four working students; Elizabeth “Lizzie” Pettee ‘17, Ripley Goodwyn ‘18, Caitlyn Conetta ‘18, and Sarah Powless ‘18. Elizabeth Pettee has a job like no St. Luke’s student before her.. At only seventeen, Pettee is the founder and acting president of her own record label. Three years ago, she decided to pursue her passion of music, and fully immersed herself in the industry. At the moment, Pettee is the only artist signed to her record label. On her decision to take on this challenge, she says, “If I could get the experience as an artist before managing artists, I’ll be able to relate to their experience more.”
Starting this business was not an easy venture for Pettee, however. In order to become an accredited business, she had to work with the state of Connecticut to get an LLC. Then, she had to meet with several banks to get an account. Two turned her down before a third took a chance and gave her the okay to start work. This experience has brought a new level of maturity to Pettee, and she explains that“You have to think about money and financials more than you thought. You can’t run out of money because, if you do, your company is out of business.” As a high school senior who knows how to manage account books for her own company, Lizzie says it is pretty difficult to compare her job to an after school activity.
