The king appointed his personal attendant at the city gate to oversee the sudden abundance that God had miraculously sent for the people. Elisha had earlier prophesied sudden abundance of great food relief during this severe famine. The king’s assistant argued with him saying that it can't happen and Elisha told him a message from God that he will see it with his eyes but he will not eat of it. (2 kings 7: 1-2 and17).
There was probably a commotion at the gate during which he was trampled on and died. There's no record that anyone else died but only him died hence fulfilling Elisha's prophesy.
