Deviant behavior is defined as any human activity that violates social norms. Social norms are the basic framework that help to keep our society organized and functioning. People that don’t or can’t abide by those norms are present in every aspect of humanity. Normally people will identify these outsiders and keep their distance. Mostly these individuals end up on the fringes of our civilized world, though there are certainly exceptions to this rule. Certain people whom are lacking the basic social skills necessary are excelling at life because they have found their niche.

The concept of the anomie theory was introduced a year was introduced a year before the introduction of the concept of white collar crime. This theory states that people are taught to value certain goals and luxuries. When someone is born without success then they must resort to any means necessary to obtain a certain level of success. Guess who’s coming to Dinner directed by Stanley Kramer addresses many sociological areas throughout its 108 minute run time (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)). Three main areas that were apparent throughout this movie were Deviance, Social Stratification, and Race & Ethnicity. Deviance is defined as “the recognized violation of cultural norms” (Macionis). Deviances in society help to establish social control, attempts made by society to regulate people’s thoughts and behaviors, which comes out in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner when Mr. Drayton mentions that interracial marriage is still illegal in 17 states at the time this movie came out (Kramer). Within the movie there were moments that demonstrated defiant behavior, the at the beginning…

It is my belief that Bernard Madoff engaged in the Ponzi scheme at first to build his company. Bernard was a “blue collar” worker, upon graduation from high school he was a life guard in the summer and installed refrigeration systems. Bernard Madoff Investment Securities was started from the labor of these jobs (Gregoriou & Lhabitant, 2009). What may have started as a temporary scheme to ensure the success of his company, quickly got away from him; although I do believe that Madoff found a loop hole in the stock exchange and took advantage of it. My reasoning to believe this is by the following: the exclusiveness with investing with Madoff, the heavy presence of nepotism within BMIS, and the lack of compliance with the Securities and Exchange…

Our book states that deviance is the violation of norms, rules, or expectations. Some of the ones that I am familiar with is speeding, breaking of the gender barrier, not partaking all of your roles in life. There are many other deviances that I can think of hearing about, seeing, or being a part of. Howard S. Becker said “it is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant”. This important because just breaking a norm is not the only important factor but how others will react to it too.…

When I think of the term deviance, the words that tend to come across my mind will be strange, inappropriate, and rule breaking. This is because deviance is an explanation for behaviors or actions that breaches social norms, be it for formal breaching or informal breaching of social norms. Thus, it is some sort of rule breaking because deviant behaviors are those that breach the social norms, which is like a rule for the society. Deviance may be action or behaviors that are inappropriate because it deviates from what is appropriate in the society. Besides that, it may appear to be strange as well because it is not what a people will usually do.…

Deviance is pretty much the “labor” that society successfully applied to an individual. “The consequence is that we become more interested in the process by which deviants are defined by the rest of the society, than in the nature of the deviant act itself.” (Sociology 149) I found that the text of the contributions of labeling theory to be the gist of success or failure in schools.…
