Brassica rapa is a Wisconsin fast plant which is as well a member of the mustard family. These plants are considered fast plants because they develop very quickly, flowering in 13-18 days and completing their entire reproductive cycle in about 35 days. With these Wisconsin fast plants we observed the happening of Gregor Mendel’s principles of inheritance patterns. Starting off, some history of Gregor Mendel is that he was an Austrian monk who studied the inheritance of seven different traits in the garden pea, and developed a set of principles to describe the spread of those characteristics (Casper et al 2016). Gregor Mendal was easily able to achieve this by using true breeding plants.…

In Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives and Our Lives Change Our Genes, author Sharon Moalem uses a concoction of historical happenings, real-life experiences, and patient case history to portray two main biological concepts: deviations from Mendelian genetics and epigenetics (Moalem, 2014). In regards to the AP Biology curriculum, these two concepts relate, respectively, to the third and fourth big ideas that make-up the course’s framework. The third big idea in the AP Biology curriculum declares that, “Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes” (The College Board, 2015). The continual survival and growth in all living organisms hinge on the genetic information they inherit from…

In this version of “The Second Son,” I took your advice to tell the story from another POV the extreme and changed from “single I” to an epistolary piece, with no central narrator. In this version, Mal Dallon is less of a “crazy” man, wandering the streets and fighting off his own personal demons, and more of an ignored messiah, in that he’s bringing a message to an unenlightened world (through his death), only for it to be quickly forgotten for the next news bite. Is this version better than the original? I honestly don’t know. But, I can say that it’s completely different.…

The article focuses on underlying the main concept of gender roles in a historical context where primates have developed and adapted to, which, over time, has given sense to the roles that contribute to today’s society. The author compares and contrasts the root of the similarities between primates and human lifestyles while giving an understanding of what these adaptations of gender roles concludes. The article describes the roles of male and female…

Birth Order "The one thing you can bet your paycheck on is that the firstborn and second born in any given family are going to be different," (Voo 1). Doctor Leman, a psychologist that has been studying birth order since 1967 has noted this throughout his years of research. Whether first born, middle child, or the youngest in a family, there are going to be certain personality traits that are commonly found in a person depending on the order of their birth. For an example, usually it can be quite difficult to find a comedian that is a first born child (Cowley 17) because usually the youngest is the more of the out going person and not as much of a conscientious and structured person.…

Firstborn children are typically believed to be serious, conscientious, directive, goal-oriented, aggressive, rule-conscious, exacting, conservative, organized, responsible, jealous, fearful, high achieving, competitive, high in self-esteem, and anxious. They may learn the concept of power at a young age, and this can be expressed in their desire to help, protect and lead others. The firstborn may also have the need to regain praise from their parents that they received before their siblings were born. The first born may come to feel unloved through the perceived loss of mother's love to the new baby. Adler (1964) referred to this as being "dethroned" by the younger sibling.…

In a new article published in the New York Times, a study was conducted that proves that children who are born from older fathers have a higher risk of getting a mental illness, compared to their siblings. These mental illnesses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism (Carey 2014). The study was conducted in Sweden since they keep good track of their medical records. This made it easier for researchers to look at siblings and see if the age of the father had any correlation with acquiring a mental illness. Studies like these have been conducted numerous times, but some studies show strong support for older fathers having children who would later have a mental disorder while others find no relations.…
