Elderly Stereotypes

Old, wrinkly, old ‘farts’, wise, elderly and the older generation are just some words that bring forth positive and negative ideologies towards the aged group, at which these are just assumptions, stereotypes and generalisations about the elderly, and how they should behave are expressions that can have a tremendous impact on the individual within the group. Stereotypical comments, harsh attitudes and exclusive matters from the community can impact an elderly person negatively. Whilst, communities try and include and minimise the stereotypical comments and none-the-less love them, this can positively impact the individual.

The Aged, are routinely subjected to both positive and negative stereotypes, regarding their physical and mental capabilities. Ageing, is a normal, highly individualised and complex process, that continues to be stereotyped, by younger generations. By being included within the community, it can make the seniors feel good about themselves and that they aren't just ‘old farts’, boosting their self esteem and feeling wanted and needed.

NSW Seniors Festival, is the largest festival for seniors in the southern hemisphere, with a 500,000 attendance each year.
