From a national level, to individual states the elder population is rising and relatedly the level of elder abuse is increasing as well. The term elder mistreatment and abuse is a broad category that differs from state to state. As of late, more and more states are beginning to engage in the seriousness of elder abuse and develop a common understanding for the term elder abuse. Through efforts of advocacy and policies elder mistreatment is beginning to be known as a national issue that needs to be handled with accordingly. Family stressors can contribute to elder abuse when there has been a pattern of violent history interactions within the family’s lifestyle. In certain cases, elder abuse between marital relationships can be an ongoing occurrence within the family for many years. Certain circumstances where an older parent who has physical or cognitive limitations, the adjustments can be stressful and lead to abuse. A risk factor for abuse is isolation, as it may be an indicator that the family is in trouble. From state to state are varying definitions, rules, and regulations for reporting elder abuse on both national and state levels. Mainly it is up to the general public, advocacy groups, and typically any person that wants to get involved to help voice the realities of elder abuse. In an effort to spread the realities of elder abuse it is important to educate and provide training opportunities for the public, and professionals that work with the elder population in an effort to minimize the risk for elder mistreatment.
