The Hazards Communication Standard (HCS) compliance checklist states that you must:
Know the regulations; identify responsible staff; identify and list all chemicals; write the plan maintain good labeling on containers; provide quick access to MSDSs for all employees on all shifts; train all employees on all possible chemical exposures; frequently review and revise the program. (Haight, 2012, pg. 154).
Of the eight HCS compliance checklist standards listed above “identify responsible staff” has to be the most significant. If you don’t put the right people (most experience/qualified personnel) in key positions, then you are truly setting yourself up for failure. Training: is a continuous process of preserving and improving individual ability to carry out an activity in the best way possible. “Training is what’s done when the goal is to get any employee to do something specific” (Haight, 2012, p. 173). Education: “the action or process of teaching someone especially in a school, college, or university; the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university” (Merriam-Webster, n.d., “Education,” pg. 1). Education is a formative process of instilling knowledge, skills and diverse set of attitudes which will bring a desired outcome in the behavior of the person in question. Education is a long-term process, dependent on the life experiences of the trainee” (Haight, 2012, p. 173).
