Today people use the alphabet, but many centuries ago in Egypt the Egyptians used what are called Hieroglyphics. 391 A.D., Theodosius I (Byzantine Emperor) closed all Pagan temples in his empire. His action terminated a 4,000 year old tradition and an Egyptian language that was 1,500 years old. According to archaeological discoveries, hieroglyphics may be the oldest writing form. Hieroglyphics can symbolize tools, animals, boats, motion, time, and joy. There are 3 classes of hieroglyphs, phonograms, logograms (or Ideograms), and determinatives.

An Egyptian Phonogram is a part of a hieroglyph that represents 1 or more sounds. Phonograms can be used in someone’s name to represent what their name means. Since pharaohs are a higher
