Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiment video coincided well with our previous class discussion on social learning. It showed the modeling videos that the children participating in the experiment were exposed to and supplemented the section that discussed the theory in the book. For example, the book emphasizes observation and imitation as the primary mechanisms of development in social learning theory. This is reflected in Dr. Bandura’s usage of modeling videos as an observational tool and the children’s immediate imitation of the modeled behavior. His experiment also reinforced the importance of social learning, even in the absence of reinforcement. In the book, Siegler goes into more detail by describing Bandura’s concept of vicarious reinforcement, which is defined as “observing someone else receive a reward or punishment” (352). Despite children modeling the aggressive behavior less when they witnessed the model being punished, it was discovered that all of the children had still learned and remembered the model’s behavior from simply observing. This was supported by later evidence that children could reproduce the behavior if given an incentive. Overall, the video was a visual representation of the content we covered in class about social learning, in addition to what the text explains. While the text covers more of the scientific terms that coincide with social learning theory and goes into much greater detail, Dr. Bandura’s video provides the audience with enough …show more content…
Bandura’s experiment was interesting to watch. Although the footage was old and somewhat blurry, this did not take away from the overall significance of the experiment. However, the audio for the segment could have been clearer or closed captioning could have been utilized to compensate for the audio. Frequently, there is no audio to coincide with the video of the children interacting with the Bobo doll, which was confusing and awkward to viewers. In addition to this, Dr. Bandura does not offer any physical representations of the results of the experiment, such as bar graphs, to supplement the effects of the modeling task. Overall, the experiment was interesting to watch and but did not provide ample research results or a pleasant viewing experience, though it does incite an interest in the theory. This video could be shown to any audiences who are interested in learning theories and any students currently studying theories of social
