Once a family is looking into emergency assistance, the Home Base Program will investigate their claim and determine eligibility for shelter placement. If the family is eligible for other housing options, they will not get placed into one of their shelters immediately, as they are not priority at the time. A key point to emphasize to families is that entering a shelter does not guarantee them a stable apartment. They must still do their part to continue searching for a permanent home, and stable income. Subsidy programs in the city are available and families can remain in shelters for a long period of time.…

Overview Everyone in America talks about the American dream; a big house with a great family and a white picket fence in the yard. For others, the American dream is to never have an empty stomach, it’s a place other than the cold and dirty concrete, it’s where people can shower more than once a week. The American dream isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be for some. There are people that go day after day barely surviving.…

I understand that people looking for a better life come to our country because they believe that our country will provide better opportunities for them and their families. This can be a burden on our government and takes a lot of weight on their shoulders of handling the newcomers. I can’t imagine not receiving healthcare because of my age or health history or not having food to eat, a house to live in or public education. However I do believe we should step back and look at our problems here. We have many homeless people, starving children, disabled veterans, etc.…

Our goal today is to persuade everyone to call, write, and email or visit their Senator or Representative and let their voice be heard about spending our tax dollar money outside of the U.S. and wastefully inside the U.S. when there are people and items here that need attention first. The U.S. spends billions oversees to help other nations, with food, medical supplies, military equipment, and just plain money, why? We understand humanitarian efforts and help thy neighbor, however not sure why we spend so much giving military equipment and cash to other nations, while there are those right here at home in need. In our personal lives we cannot give our money away if we need it to take care of our family and backyard first. So how and why does…

Since I first moved out to Tempe from last fall 2014 there was an issue that i've been noticing every time I go out on a weekend to Mill Avenue with my friends. Homeless people are scattered all around the area, ones who ask for money, others who ask for weed, and the rest of them who are just there to sleep. This problem is worldwide, but I think it's mandatory to try and decrease it, especially because it's a college town in Tempe,Arizona. There is not much done these days to help with affordable housing for everyone, but it's going to keep increasing if nothing is done. I think the main reason why homeless people gather up at Mill Avenue is because they try to hunt for money from students.…

From teenagers to the elderly population, drug addiction is a big concern. Not only are the drug abusers being “supported” by the drug dealers, but they are putting their selves in other situations, just to receive what they “need”. To get what they need, they will experience homelessness, diseases, and depression.…

Giving homeless people housing and supportive services is cheaper than one might think. The study by the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness found that it would cost taxpayers just $10,051 per homeless person to give them a permanent place to live and services like job training as well as health care (“Leaving”). This is a dramatically reduced number—68 percent less than the public currently spends—as opposed to the previous amount it would take to have hundreds of people stay homeless. If Central Florida took the permanent supportive housing approach, it could save $350 million over the next decade. This is a staggering amount of money saved just by putting these people into homes and programs that can help them.…

I think they should open up poor farms, or community farms, like they had back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. If the states or counties in the united states would open one per two or three counties the homelessness would go away completely or it would cut it down almost to nothing. Poor farms are like community homes where homeless people can go to live but they would have to work on the farm to earn a living. They should make it so when a family or an individual comes into the farms they will have to sign a contract for how many years or months they will have to live there. They can’t leave until their contract is up and they will be set up with a job when they leave the farms.…
