Effective Communication In Emergency Department

The person who I interviewed was Oscar Ward, a Paramedic Captain. The focus of the interview was the communication system between the firefighters, and with the other emergency agencies. Captain Ward mentioned that face-to-face is their primary way of communication within the fire department, and with the other emergency agencies. In other emergency circumstances, radio will be another common communication system to use. It caught my attention on how does the communication system work during emergency circumstances? How long does it take to communicate the emergency plan within the fire department and with the other agencies during an emergency circumstance promptly?

It needs to maintain daily to minimize any failures, and there should be a qualified technician to inspect the radio system. When the firefighters are in an emergency crisis, it cannot take any chances to have radio transmitter malfunctions. "Many of the 800mHz radio systems currently in use depend upon technology to the extent that, should one part of the system fail, even line-of-sight radio communications can be negatively impacted". (Thiel, n.d., p. 10).
Firefighters do not only have the training on how to extinguish the fire. They also have the training on how to deal with any emergency and unexpected incident. The radio system is the tools they use mostly to communicate with each other in a scene. It is mandatory to maintain the equipment, including the gears and communication system. They should always have a backup batteries or generator if the radio is running out of battery. It could happen when the rescue needs an extended time, as the incident of 911 in New York. When I interviewed Captain Ward, it is evident the fire department has the training they have. They are professional in putting out the fire, and how to face any possible incidents at the scene. When they do not need to call out, they will do maintenance on their gears, their engines, and all the equipment they came across every day. The chief and firefighters of the fire department need to have a communication system. The chief needs to be available to listen when the firefighters need. The firefighters need to report to the chief when they discover any malfunction of the tools and equipment. The fire department should be ready to serve the public, and it is crucial for them to be available at any

Through collaboration and training, fire departments and other agencies come together to mitigate or solve problems. One of the hot topics in the fire service is cancer prevention. Through the collaboration of organizations such as the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the International Association of Firefighters, the Firefighter Cancer Foundation, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and other groups are working together to raise awareness and the prevention of cancer in firefighters. The issue is far too large and impacts too many lives to be addressed by a single organization.
