Edwin Hubble was an famous American astronomer who contributed many discoveries and new ideas to the field of extragalactic astronomy during his lifetime. He is regarded as one of the most valuable astronomers from the 20th century.
Edwin Powell Hubble was born to Virginia Lee Hubble and John Powell Hubble in Marshfield, Missouri on 20 November 1889. In 1900, his family moved to Wheaton, Illinois. As a child, Hubble was gifted both intellectually and athletically, excelling in baseball, football, basketball, and track. In 1910, he graduated from the University of Chicago studying law, which was followed by a bachelor’s degree in science. He then went to The Queen’s College in Oxford, England and earned his master’s degree. In 1917, while he was still studying for his doctorate, Hubble was invited to work at Mount Wilson Observatory in California by George Ellery Hale, the founder of the Observatory. However, WWI was in progress and Hubble enlisted in the infantry. He telegraphed Hale the next day saying, “Regret cannot accept your invitation. Am off to the war.” In 1919, when he was discharged. The new Major Hubble immediately went to the Observatory and introduced himself, still in uniform.

Now known as the Hubble Space Telescope, the telescope is one of the largest and best in the world, transmitting valuable data and pictures to astronomers on Earth. On 6 March 2008, the U.S. Postal Service released a 41-cent stamp honoring the work of Hubble on a sheet of stamps called “American Scientists.” His citation says, “Often called a "pioneer of the distant stars," astronomer Edwin Hubble (1889–1953) played a pivotal role in deciphering the vast and complex nature of the universe.
