The neighborhood is in awe of Edward and are heavily eager to meet him, which is the exact opposite as to what he is used to. Eventually, after finding his talent of creating art from shrubs and cutting hair for the women in the neighborhood, Edward warms up to the newly-found attention, but not before meeting Peg’s daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder), whom he instantly falls in love with. Kim’s boyfriend, Jim (Anthony Michael Hall), on the other hand, isn’t too fond of Edward as he and his friends try to embarrass and humiliate him any way they can. The houses in the neighborhood are all of the same style and period, showcasing the concept of perfection in the embodiment of 1950’s suburbia. This idea of conformity is heavily implied in the conception of the neighborhood in which everyone lives. Adding to the clashing differences in setting is the seemingly out of place hill in which the mansion where Edward resides is situated. It brings with it the dark and mysterious being that Edward embodies while Peg’s outgoing personality illustrates the times she lives in. For example, when Peg drives Edward in her bright yellow pastel car out of the old and run down estate into the bright and vibrant neighborhood, it symbolizes two worlds colliding; the one in which Edward lives in the one in which Peg and the rest of the neighborhood lives
