As explained thoroughly in Students Success in College, acculturation and alignment of the students are two very effective ways of providing good support for students academically and giving them a sense of belonging in the campus regardless of their identity or background. Acculturation is the knowledge of different types of resources in the campus and alignment is the resources provided to meet the needs of students to reach their goals. OASIS is a good example for a program that has been implemented to provide support for those with less resources and background knowledge about navigating college. This knowledge of different students having the need for different types of resources and support is very crucial for the purposes of advocating equity. As a tutor and a faculty of OASIS this awareness will motivate me to learn about my student’s background and not only change my tutoring style to fit their needs, but also to provide them with the knowledge other resources and activities in campus that will help their success. There will be moments where many first year students, some of whom are first generation or are part of an underrepresented community, will have difficulty just adjusting to the college environment and finding resources for their education and even just living in a different environment.
