In its most basic form is a person who makes something, or expanding the definition, one that makes (Merriam-Webster, 2016). It is a builder, an engineer, a person who uses their hands to create, applying our knowledge in the creation of something. In practice, this can range anywhere from a person who makes clothes, an engineer who creates code for a program, even an artist who uses metal as a medium in a creation could be considered a “maker”. The art of “making”, while it can be called an art, is rather steeped in the ability to use our hands and knowledge in constructing something.

Introduction. We are the Maker Education Initiative, which was founded in 2012. Our organization is a non-profit that supports and empowers educators and communities, particularly, those in underserved areas, to facilitate meaningful making and learning experiences with youth. Our Vision, every child is a “Maker”. Our Mission, to create more opportunities for all young people to develop confidence, creativity, and interest in science, technology, engineering, math, art, and learning as a whole through making (Makered.org, 2016).

Engagement in Learning. By supporting faculty, teachers, and administration with making deeply impactful experiences, we will connect with youth to increase their desire for lifelong learning.
2. Transformation of Education. Through advocacy on a national scale, we will multiply the transformative impact that making and maker education has on the lives of youth everywhere.
3. Collaboration and Community. We believe in nurturing a well-connected and networked community of educators that can support and learn from each other as they start, grow and sustain maker programming.
4. The Diversity of Approaches. We believe that the diversity inherent in maker education approaches and applications are crucial in creating inclusive learning environments that enable multiple entry points to “making”.
5. Access for All. We believe in the importance of access to meaningful making experiences for every child, and we aim to facilitate that access through an intentional focus on underserved communities and individuals.
