Educating Esme Book Report

Educating Esme is a story of a teacher’s thoughts, teachings and life before and during her first year teaching in Chicago. The book begins with her talking of her mentor and how she taught her to love the children and jump in and take charge. Madame Esme as she likes to be called lands a job at an enter city Chicago public school, she begins the time before school starts with ideas for a story book festival that gets shot down and with a battle for her “not legal” name to be her formal name at the school. She bumps heads with the principal in this area, yet he wants her to be at his beck and call, calling all hours and doing tons of extra paper work for him. I love that she has so much excitement in setting up her room and making it her own, she goes into such detail about the boards she makes and how proud she is for that first day. She gets her share of nosey input and sideways glances in how she has decorated her room, one teacher even says she has made the room over …show more content…
I learned to make my room mine, and to be creative even if that means that my room stands out from the others. I learned to be creative when books and lectures don’t get the point across. I just loved her use of music and dance to teach math, which will be something I use in my own classroom. I think the most important thing that I learned to do would be to bring love in, no matter how hard a day may be for me, it may be two times as hard for the children as well. Showing those kids love in the classroom may be the only time they get it, everyone deserves a safe place. I think the one thing I learned to not do is would maybe be not allowing the switching of places and having the child teach my classroom. I think the outcome worked great for her, maybe not so much now, it seemed like pure ciaos could ensue at any

The article I have chosen to write about is “Teaching the Love of Reading,” written by Donna E, Werderich and Janet L. Pariza. The article is broken down into four different steps. About five minutes from my house, in between Holmes Road and Wornall Road, on 107th street, sits Red Bridge Elementary. A brick school that was not very big, but had a massive playground behind it spanning what seemed to be the size of 3 football fields, Red Bridge taught grade kindergarten through fifth grade. Walking in the front entrance, the office of the principal is straight on your right and there is a hallway going left and right and off of that hallway are two hallways that go straight. Down the right hallway is the younger kids such as the kindergarten and first grade classrooms and down the left hallway are the fourth and fifth grade classrooms. Each day kids pile off the bus into the school to see what the day has in store for them.…

One thing I learned was to be prepared for the unexpected. Teaching young children isn’t something an instructor can schedule minute-by-minute, but rather has to be extremely flexible to fit in every possible scenario from a lack of concentration or interest to an emergency bathroom break or social conflict between students. Another thing I learned from this experience was that children want to have fun and they want to like their teacher. Keeping these two things in mind while instructing relieves a lot of worries from my heart and mind. I also learned to not take yourself or a not-so-great lesson too seriously.…

I consistently explored ways to make lessons effective for all my students. My greatest accomplishment at that time as an educator was coaching my students to learn new skills and concepts. I planned, over planned and learned to be flexible enough to change the plans at any given moment. I was able to see the dynamics of children learning.…

For my Service- Learning I went to School on Wheels. At first I was skeptical because I wasn’t sure what a public school in the city school was going to be like, let alone a program that targets students that are homeless. However that’s also the reason why I chose to do my service learning hours with School on Wheels. I wanted to reach outside my comfort zone and get experience working in a more diverse environment. From the time I spent at IPS14 School I’ve learned so much, such as diversity, socialization, myself and who I want to be as an educator.…

There are five different categories of educational philosophy and I fall a little too obviously in the Existentialism category. Once I understood Existentialism however, I realized that I definitely identified with most of this philosophy. As a child I did not understand the value of school until I came to look at everything differently. Looking back at my home life now, I realize that my parent’s absence of passion for learning spilled over into me for the first few years. My father attempted to get me to begin reading and it all died in vain for many years.…

Overall from observing all the different levels and classes, I learned a great deal about dealing with different situations and characters of children of many ages. The entire process of my clearances and school placements was easy. I have been involved in my son’s, now a 4th grader, classrooms since he was in preschool. For most of my observation hours, I had the honor and pleasure to observe at the Montgomery County College Children’s Center. I specifically chose to observe in this center because I am interested in teaching and being involved in young children’s learning adventures.…

I was privileged enough to do my classroom observation in a place near and dear to my heart, my hometown high school in Sidney, MT. I was invited into Mrs. Lang’s classroom where she taught a variety of classes. Mrs. Lang teaches culinary arts I and II, fashion I and II, early childhood education, child development, and international foods. What I love most about this school is how friendly and supportive the students and staff are. During the day, Mrs. Lang teaches freshman to seniors and even at one point- preschoolers!…

By only observing you just see how great the teacher is or is not you do not get to really do it for yourself. So, I believe the one think I will have to work on before I will be able to be a teacher like Mrs.Thrush is practice how to manage a classroom. I will take so many of the ideas I have seen in my different observations and hopefully I will be able to be just as flawless and make it look as they do. I believe every other aspect of being a classroom teacher I have had a good amount of practice on so far, but like everything in life there is always room for improvement.
