The detective is mainly played in the first-person narrator. They interrogate suspects, looks for clues and tracks down the murderer while sharing all the clues with the readers. The investigation is based on motive opportunity, and to find a solution, but to make the case difficult for the detective and most interesting to the reader; the author puts obstacles in the detective’s way like several suspects, more murders, and threats. At the end of the story, the detective or the author unmask the plot and the methods on how they solve the case. The detective shouldn't be a professional police officer. Many are private consultants, like Rex Srout's Nero Wolfe, a gourmet, and gifted amateurs. A number of police detectives gained popularity during the late 1900's and early 2000's. Auguste Dupin, a man with natural analytical methods and can read what the other person is thinking. Dupin can explain the chain of reasoning that leads his thoughts merely by observing the sequence of expressions and using his powers to help solve the mystery. According to Strandmag, “ Poe was slightly annoyed at the attention paid to the Dupin stories at the expense of his other literary works”.
