Each year in my town, lands are laid bare due to building or running of quarries, subdivisions, roads, clean fills as well as other developments or substantial regions of land are stripped of for plantation. Without proper erosion and sediment management, these actions can lead to accelerated onsite erosion and significantly increased sedimentation of lakes, waterways, estuaries and harbors. Erosion is a natural process that may be significantly accelerated by human activities, notably those that disturb the soil or that alter or remove plant life. We all can play a part in preventing erosion and sedimentation from happening right from our own home. It may seem this issue is confined to farmers or local governments and they are going to get to be the ones that cope with it, but everyone is affected by erosion.
