The Title X program was developed in 1970 by President Nixon, which provides funding for more than four million low income families for family planning services. For over 40 years, Title X funding has assisted in the much-needed health care and now it is being cut from Planned Parenthood’s funds. Though Title X funds go towards things such as breast cancer screenings, testing for STI and STD’s, well woman exams and much more, it states in the Section 1008 of the law that, “No Title X funds can be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning”**. Title X funds Planned Parenthood, and both women and men rely on Title X at about 4,000 Planned Parenthood centers each year. Planned Parenthood serves close to one third of Title X patients at their clinics, and although Title X funds do not fund abortions, Republicans do not want to fund a program that services abortion. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest family planning provider, and because they are being cut off financially by Title X, where does this leave the low income families who utilize services from this provider? After evaluating the Planned Parenthood program, data indicates that their services go beyond abortions. Planned Parenthood actually has stated that only 3% of their services are abortions, of the 10.6 million total services in the 2013 annual report. Defunding this organization is going to be detrimental to the clients to uses this place for services other than abortion. About 528 million of the funds comes from the government alone, so they would be suffering a huge dip in services. Also this means that people will probably lose their job working for Planned Parenthood because the organization would be in financial troubles with that lack of funding
