Today’s society is causing everyone males and females to have a negative view of his or her overall appearance or body image. In magazines you see these size zero females that are airbrushed to be perfect, causing females to feel as if that is how all females must look to be referred to as “beautiful or sexy.” Nevertheless magazines speak not only to females, but males also making them feel as if in order to be “sexy” that they need to have big muscles with a perfect body. Consequently, these magazines are causing us to acquire these dieting fads that can easily turn into an eating disorder which can cause serious health risks in the future.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Eating disorders affect both genders, although rates among women and girls are 2½ times greater than among men and boys. Eating disorders frequently appear during the teen years or young adulthood, but also may develop during childhood or later in life.” (NIMH, 2014) Also according to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Inc “at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States, and every 62 minutes at least one person dies from a direct result …show more content…
Anorexia nervosa is the disorder in which the person sees themselves as overweight when in reality they are extremely thin. People who suffer from anorexia nervosa tend to follow strict diets, extreme exercise, and force themselves to vomit after meals. In the more serious cases, people use laxatives, diuretics or enemas in order to ensure that the food leaves their body fast as it came into it. The obsession of weight causes them to weigh multiple times a day. This is a really serious illness that is more common than we think. (NIMH,
