One part of the chapter that initally stood out to me was the section regarding the Long Trail. The Long Trail is such an iconic piece of Vermont today, but I feel like Albers fails do it justice in Hands on the Land. The Long Trail was a vision shared by the men and women of the Green Mountain Club. The trail starts in Massachusetts and weaves its way through the Vermont wilderness before eventually reaching Canada. It spans the entire Green Mountain range for a total of 270 miles, and sees thousands of hikers every year.…

With the acquiring of western lands from Mexico after the Mexican American War, more and more people became interested in the westward frontier. It was many years ago that I found myself to be away from home the first time. I was a cub scout then and was super nervous. I was always super cautious and wary of dangers hiding behind the corner. I thought that something would jump out and scare me, or drag me to my doom. I felt more comfortable being at home versus being in the wilderness, where I felt exposed to the unknown and maybe the wrath of mother nature.…

Memoir One of the scariest moments on my annual trip to South Carolina happened last year. I was at this really cool science place with lots of activities and rides, it was called Wonderworks. I was looking around at all the families and all the other kids who where about to do what I was going to, lie on a bed made of nails. The nails were facing upwards and looked really sharp, I was paranoid to lie down because I felt like I would get stabbed by 3,500 nails and I would die. Finally I walked around and worked up the nerve to go over to the bed and then I was about to lie down.…

The hysterical thing about it is that there is no room for forgiveness when it comes to fear or even self-awareness. Fear has shaped me, and turned me into the man I am now; though it is not my decision to clarify what kind of man I am; that is for other people like my peers to decide. But yes, multiple times I have had fears. For example, this past year of our marching band season; at semi-state, everyone in our band feared that we were not going to make it to state. Even though, almost everyone within the program had confidence that we had an awesome show that day.…
