Early Literacy Development

The ability to read is critical for student’s literacy development and is crucial to developing their future learning. Learning is a lifelong journey (Gray, 2012, p.221) and teaching is imperative for reading development. Teaching students to become independent and successful readers is a complex process that requires educators to have explicit knowledge of the six main elements involved in the reading process. It is fundamental for teachers to prepare their students to gain meaning from what they have read. The six main elements for reading development includes oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. A balanced approach to teaching these necessary components for reading instruction will promote effective independent readers (Sperling, Sherwood & Hood, 2013, p.462). Effective reading occurs when educators teach children to read to the best of their ability (Bayetto, 2013, p.20).
Oral language is the first element of literacy development and is vital to the reading process. To understand written language students, need proficient oral language skills as oral language is the foundational layer for all future literacy development. Literacy being the ability to read and write (Konza, 2010, p.1, Konza 2016,

Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in spoken language (Learning Point Associates 2004, p.4). Being able to hear each sound, recognise the difference in each sound and replicating sounds is known as phonological awareness (Rog, 2011, p.52). Phonological awareness is the next element in the reading process and is a building block required to develop independent and successful readers. Additionally, educators need to have explicit knowledge of phonemic awareness. Ewing, Callow & Rushton (2016, p.123) describe phonemic awareness as the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds in spoken

What key instructional principles do research-validated reading interventions often include? There are different components for students to acquire to be competent and fluent readers; phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. Phonemic awareness is the ability to understand the sounds in a word. Phonic in word study is similar to phonemic awareness as it requires students to decode sounds in words to pronounce the word.…

The phonemes are less sharply defined. As a result of this weakness, children have difficulty breaking the reading code (Shaywitz, 2003). Phonemic awareness is the awareness of individual speech sounds and the ability to manipulate, combine, or isolate those sounds in words. It is the foundation for reading. All children must develop phonemic awareness to become readers.…

When trying to understand how the whole process works and how reading and writing go hand-in hand it is easy to conclude that they are co-dependents – more than often this is seen in the classroom where students who are normally successful at one, will be successful at the other as well. I would like to see more research conducted on the relationship of the two... but it is true that the sum of the whole is greater than that of the parts. I only wish there was a formula to teach reading as there is in a sense to teach writing. According to Tompkins, there are four stages of writing; pre-phonemic, phonemic, transitional, and conventional writing.…

Phonological awareness is one aspect of phonological processing. It is the conscious ability to detect and manipulate sound structures such as sentences, words, syllables and phonemes. It is the basis for reading and developing reading skills and deals with sound only. Reading acquisition is the learning or developing of reading skills and occurs in a stage-like progression (Chall, 1983), e.g. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development. Reading is oral language in a visual format.…

It is through my personal education that I will receive the necessary tools to create a thriving classroom. I will accomplish this by studying and understanding good reading instruction, goals for student learning, teaching methods and assessment practice. First, I must define reading instruction for myself and my students. “There’s no one best way to teach reading and writing; instead, teachers create a balanced literary program using two or more approaches.” (Tompkins, 2014 p.327)…

Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words. We know that a student's skill in phonemic awareness is a good predictor of later reading success or difficulty. It is crucial to children’s’ early literacy skills that parents and teachers read and talk to children to develop this critical literacy skill. Reading aloud to a child is the best single activity to becoming a good reader.…

    1) What is phonological awareness and why is it important for beginning reading success? a. Phonological awareness is used to describe a range of skills that involve the understanding, use, and recall of sounds. Phonological awareness also in compasses a skill known as phonemic awareness, which is the ability to focus on and manipulate phonemes in spoken words. Phonological awareness is important for beginning reading success because it allows children to know that each letter of the alphabet represents a certain sound(s) and when they come across that letter while reading they will be able to pronounce it. This later evolves into being able to pronounce words that have several letters that combines their sounds to make a word.…

This video demonstrated how a second grade teacher was using phonics in her classroom every day by going over the alphabet chart and practicing each letters sound. She explained that she reviews the letter sounds every morning since many of her students came to her class and did not know their letter sounds. The video also shows the use of another pillar of reading, phonemic awareness. During the video the teacher asks the students to identify all the words on the chart that end in the letter “Y” that have the long E sound or long I sound. By asking the students to identify these sounds they have to pull the word apart and break it down into phonemes.…

Early years of reading instruction are crucial because success or failure during these years is a strong predictor of later success. For example, Cunningham and Stanovich (1997) examined reading skills of first graders, and ten years later, they reached half of the same students and administered their reading abilities. They discovered that first grade reading skill had significant influence on the 11th grade reading ability. Therefore, reading problems should be solved during the early years. Phonemic awareness and letter-sound relationships have to be mastered at the beginning of reading instructions, and Visual Phonics can be used to teach these skills.…

Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes in spoken words. Before children learn to read, they should become aware of sounds. They should understand speech from sounds, or phonemes (the smallest part of sound in a spoken word). Phonemic Awareness improves students' reading comprehension and allows young readers to build another important element of reading. There are three main elements of phonemic awareness: syllables, rhymes , and beginning sounds.…

Reading aloud to children is an important factor in teaching children the fundamental components of reading. Although it has been proven that reading to children before they begin school will give them a distinct advantage in the classroom, the need for reading aloud continues to be significant well beyond that point. As the teacher in an early elementary classroom it is important to read to students daily to help them develop a deeper understanding of phonemic awareness and vocabulary while using this reading to enrich the other subjects being taught. Phonemic awareness is the understanding of oral language. It especially refers to the ability to recognize specific sounds in a word and understand the ability to reorganize these sounds…

After reviewing the reading rockets website, I found that the 5 components of beginning English reading are phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, including oral reading skills and reading comprehension strategies. Beth Antunez, author of English Language Learners and the Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction, says using these 5 components teachers can really reach their students who struggle with English reading development. The first component of the 5 is phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes in spoken words says author Beth Antunez. One activity that I can incorporate in my classroom to teach phonemic awareness is by using word family charts.…

The two assessments that measure early literacy skills for students in grades K-2 are Early Literacy Skills Assessment (ELSA) by High/Scope and the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA). The ELSA evaluates a student’s "comprehension, phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, and concepts (DeBruin-Parecki, 2005).” This process consists of three separate forms that are to be completed by the assessor throughout several evaluation activities. The first form is completed during a collaborative reading session with the student; second form is to be filled in after the completion of each session conducted and the third form which is a summary of the second form is to be finalized after it is completely filled in. Once they are reviewed…
