In prehistoric times, many new civilizations were starting to begin. Some of the most successful and advanced civilizations are found in the Middle East. These include Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, some places in Eastern Africa and Western Asia, and China. There are some requirements and goals that have to be met before a society can become a civilization and before that civilization can advance and become better. The several characteristics that a society must have in order to be considered a civilization. These features would include having a government, culture, religion, form of written language, currency (money/trade), job specialization, cities, and social classes. Many people have innovations within their civilization. An innovation is like an advancement of an item or way of life. One of the major innovations was transportation. According to the Big Era Four website and the Innovations chart, transportation made it easier to get to places faster, transport goods, and trade items with other countries. People that had this advancement were civilizations in Southwest Asia and East Africa. Another innovation is iron smelting. This advancement made it easier to farm and do work. Iron smelting made the civilization's tools stronger and it made work more efficient. Civilizations in Northern China, Northern India, and Southwestern Asia had these stronger tools. Deforestation was also a big improvement. In the innovations chart we created it mentions that the purpose of this innovation was for more land and fuel. There were less trees, therefore it made more room for farm land. People in the Mediterranean Basin, China, East Africa, and Western Europe were able to have this kind of improvement. As you can see, there are many ways that a society can become a civilization. There are eight characteristics that must be in a society before it is considered a civilization.
